LAW OF THREE (10) Effort and the Ego (2)

LAW OF THREE (10)

EFFORT AND THE EGO (2)

Effort arises out of the resistance to a desire.  Unless there is an initial desire to climb a mountain, no effort will take shape.  No climber will arise.

In our daily experience the forces of desire-resistance-effort are in continuous conversation.  When the three forces come to an agreement and are ready to play, decision enters,  and spontaneous action takes place.

Effort and the Ego

The energy of Effort (3rd force) arising out of two contrary forces, enables the triad move forward into a new triadic configuration.  The ensuing new triad may lead to unexplored territory or back into an old repetitive one.  It depends on the nature of the leading 3rd. force .  Is it the Ego? Or is it Wisdom?
.
In dual consciousness, the Ego identifies himself as the 'doer' of all the actions.   "I am doing all this and all that.  If I do not make efforts nothing will get done."  From the perspective of non dual consciousness the effort needed is an 'effortless effort.'  It starts with a conscious decision and it follows with self observation.  Those familiar with Advaita philosophy will know that only Prakriti (nature) acts.

LAW OF THREE (9) The Energy of Effort

LAW OF THREE (9)

THE ENERGY OF EFFORT

Effort is the energy given to us that enables us to 'do' work.

We normally believe that we can make efforts. But effort arises out a desire and the obstacle or condition necessary to satisfy that desire.    Desire precedes effort.

We cannot "make" efforts unless desire is present first.  No desire no effort.   Effort arises out of the resistance to desire.  Effort (3rd force) draws energy from both the opposing forces: desire-resistance and gives us the power to act.

Take the example of a triad in which the active force is the Essential Desire for some spiritual practice.  This desire will be opposed by the Habitual Desire to continue sitting in the armchair.  Effort (energy) will only arise ofter our consent in the proportion needed to overcome the resisting force to get up from the armchair.  But the energy of effort can only arise prior to a decision or the will of the subject  Without  decision the potential of the energy of effort will not arise. The subject will stay in the armchair.

Effort is given to meet a need.   Effort is necessary to overcome the power of habit.   The practice here is really is the strengthening of the will.

LAW OF THREE (8) Welcoming the Negative

LAW OF THREE (8)

WELCOMING THE NEGATIVE

Our functioning depends on the action of the resisting (or negative) force.  The resisting force enables the arising of the energy of effort.  We need the energy of effort to climb a mountain.    The triad is: desire to climb ( +);   the mountain  (- ) ;  the effort (=) ; and consent (Will) or the action of a 4th force.

When we try to eliminate the negative we become trapped in a cycle of rejections:

"For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do."Saint Paul

Developing consciousness depends on letting go of the attachments to negative emotions which arise automatically when we reject  the negative

Letting go of our attachment to automatic reactions (caused by our refections to the negative)  opens a gap for consciousness to manifest.

Consciousness is the clear space that allows the action of creative powers (4th impulse) to act in the sphere of transformation.

The Centering Prayer method:

The practice of letting go of thoughts,  in the Centering Prayer method, is the work of developing consciousness.

When the energy of consciousness becomes sufficiently concentrated it becomes sensitive to divine impulses of  faith, hope and love.

The initial motive in the practitioners is the intention to consent to the presence and action within ourselves of the Divine (God).

LAW OF THREE (7) Each of the three forces is a carrier of specific information.

LAW OF THREE (7)

EACH OF THE THREE FORCES IS A CARRIER OF SPECIFIC INFORMATION.

Every new event or arising in creation is the work of 3 impulses coming together and adopting the roles of an active, passive or neutralising force.

Ordinarily we are only aware of the play of two forces. But true observation needs the awareness of the working patterns of the third force in us.

Each of the three forces carries specific information.  Information, like consciousness, is present everywhere but enters our awareness in form of thoughts, feelings, and sensations

We can observe the operation of the three forces when we put our attention intentionally on something.  All forces work where the attention rests*  We then notice the arising of a three-fold nature of information.

The information from these three sources may be old information.  That is to say coming from habitual feelings, thoughts and sensations stored in memory.  Old information will give rise to habitual or repetitive responses.

Only when the information is new (not stored in memory) a world of new possibilities arises.  We need to spot the precise instant in which we notice our hand for the first time;  before it gets clouded by the discovery of a new wrinkle.

LAW OF THREE (6) Three Modes of Experience: Bodily, Emotional, Intellectual.

LAW OF THREE (6)

THREE MODES OF EXPERIENCE: BODILY, EMOTIONAL, INTELLECTUAL

Feelings and sensations are energies which we perceived internally in the form of a continuous inner conversation.  Each of the three energies is ever present but at a given moment we may become only aware of one of them. We may be dominated by a sensation or by a feeling or by thoughts or a combination of the three..

The constant flow of  these three forms of energy coming from inside and outside ourselves produce the complex range of  patters of human experience, responses and behaviour.

We may discern the play of energies when we discover that, for example, we cannot think unless there is some feeling present; or in that, if we have no interest at all in a subject,  we are unable to think about it.

Also we may notice that thoughts and feelings are continually influenced by our physical body, like the state of health, tiredness, etc,

We may also become intuitively aware of the presence of an intelligence that discerns pleasure form pain, etc. and which is equally detached from them both.

LAW OF THREE (5) In the world of duality the third force is the Ego

LAW OF THREE (5)

The only viable alternative to reactional behaviour -attraction-repulsion- is Love.

A. Blake

THE WORLD OF DUALITY

Newton's third law of motion states that " for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction."

Like-dislike, good-bad, attraction-repulsion dominate the everyday activity of the ordinary world.  If we consider that the action-reaction movements in the dual world would be cancelled (the result being 0) according to Newton's third law of motion, what keeps the activities of the world moving?

A new force coming from a different plane must be present and active to maintain the automatic and repetitive pendular activity of every moment of time.  The nature of this new force must be capable of reconciling and giving direction (or finding use) to the otherwise contrary forces.  A comparison can be made to the accelerator-breaks-steering wheel functions in a car.  The accelerator-brakes are necessary forces in the direction of the car (steering wheel).

In the aw of Three we can discern evolutionary triads and involutionary ones.  Conscious and automatic triads depending on who is in the driving seat.   The driver can be the Ego, the False or Memory-Self, or the True Self.

It may surprise that the ego can seat in the driving seat of our lives.  But although the Ego is not an a true independent force, but it is still a force, except that it can only operate through the affirming (+) or though the denying or resisting force (-). In other words the ego can only take sides or seek its own advantage by taking sides. It cannot be an independent or neutralising force because its view is dual (or partial) and can only operate by lending its force to a yes or no, like or dislike. or to the thought, feeling or sensation with which it is identified.

The Ego or False Self cannot love friends and enemies at the same time and become a true neutralising force. The ego can take sides,  but a true third force like love or justice cannot take sides. The ego, although it can control or suppress the emotions (and serve egoism), cannot serve a universal purpose (forgive enemies or show mercy).
